Craig Carlson
"Let the beauty that you love be the work that you do."
-Rumi
We are all deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague Craig Carlson in a swimming accident in December, 2001. Craig's spirit remains a source of inspiration to us all, eternally present in the work we do.
Craig would probably appreciate the following reminder from Rumi:
"Whitewater carries me along. I am a millstone turning day and night, moaning and creaking.
By my turning, you know the power and motion of the invisible river. The beloved friend is a river. The nightsky is a water-wheel revolving in that. The love-river doesn't rest. In it, if you grab a branch, the river breaks it. Any attachment you have, take hold strongly and let it be snapped off!
If you can't see the huge sky-turnings, look at the broken sticks moving by, and the foam-bubbles around you."
Melissa Hope
Melissa's history with the Institute began when she participated in the Belize programs as a student in 1998. For 5 years her role evolved from assistant group leader for younger students in Asia to administrator and group leader for the college programs. Melissa's greatest satisfaction comes from sharing in the personal transformation her students experience. Melissa earned her Bachelors Degree from Western Washington University in 2000.
Sara Bauer
Sara has been a group leader since 2000. Her experience with homesteading in the San Juan Islands has led her to become a strong advocate of sustainable development in third world countries. Sara's special gift is her ability to form intimate connections with indigenous peoples. Sara earned her Bachelors Degree from Evergreen State College in 1999.
