BRITISH CONSULAR INFORMATION SHEET

Belize

Last Updated: 5/10/2000

WE ADVISE AGAINST ALL HOLIDAY AND OTHER NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL TO BELIZE FOR THE TIME BEING. THIS IS DUE TO DAMAGE CAUSED BY HURRICANE KEITH.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Mugging is a significant risk to travellers especially in Belize City and other urban centres. There have been occasional incidents of violent crime, some targeted at tourists.

Muggings can occur at any time: day or night. Avoid dark alleys, keep valuables out of sight, do not wear jewellery. Where possible travel in groups. A qualified guide should be used for trips off the beaten track.

LOCAL TRAVEL

Hurricane Keith has caused substantial damage to Belize.

The international airport at Belize City is scheduled to open at 0600 (local time) on 4 October. But we continue to advise against all non-essential visits to Belize.

All British and other European nationals who have not already registered their whereabouts with the British High Commission in Belmopan should do so.

Care should be taken when swimming in the local rivers. Cholera has been found in the Mopan and Roaring Creek rivers in the Cayo District.

Visitors to the Belize/Guatemala border area are advised to use the officially recognised crossings only.

NATURAL DISASTERS

The Official Hurricane Season in Belize is from 1 June to 30 November. During this season visitors are advised to notify the British High Commission in Belmopan of their presence in Belize
