THAILAND OVERVIEW

Thailand … natural wonderland of jungles, caves and great beaches … saffron-robed Theravadin monks mingle in traffic; villages radiate serenity; the product of deep devotion and hard work; one finds animism in the hill tribes, capitalism in Bangkok. In between the dictatorship of Myanmar and the near chaos of Cambodia, most people practice democracy, love their king, and trust their army. The traditions, hopes and fears of Asia can be seen in Thailand.

The reputation of Thai people as generous and fun loving is balanced by their strong-minded independence. They are, like their cuisine, varied, lively and deserving of respect. They are, like the writing of Thich Nhat Hahn, subtle, substantial and elegant.

Thailand is a nation in transition. Signs of the best and the worst of modernization proliferate. Is it possible to assimilate the benefits of the 21st century, while preserving cultural identity? Thailand is going to try. Our program offers students an opportunity to observe and participate in the process of change and support the preservation of a great tradition. We’re mindful of the traditional Thai invitation, "First listen intently to the music; then join the dance."
